The code that needs to be entered is found on the cover page of the manual. We settled on a verification screen that will ask the player for a code before their first time playing the game. The other thing that needed to be addressed is ensuring that players have the manual before attempting to play and making sure that it is the correct version in case we ever need to change important parts of it or add new content to the game.

This website hosts pdf and web versions of the manual to make it easy to both print it or view it on devices. In the end the best solution that we found was a publicly available website that could be shared easily with all of the players. Even though this isn’t necessarily insurmountable, it is a burden on the players that would probably take away from their first experience with the game. This would also mean that unless players were planning on printing the manual from the device that they are using to play the game the players would also need to work out a way to send the manual to a tablet, phone or computer that the experts would use.

Simply including a digital copy of the manual with the game would have meant either having instructions on how to find the manual in the file system or some mechanism to open it easily. With the game only being available digitally we needed to figure out some other way for players to acquire the manual without being too onerous.

With a physical version of a game this would be pretty straightforward, we would just include a physical copy of the manual and never update it under any circumstances.
At the same time we want to do our best to keep player hassle to a minimum. This means that we needed to figure out a way to instruct the players on how to get the manual and we also needed to make sure that they have the right version in case it ever needs to be updated.

Technically you could be able to memorize every solution, but a lot of the puzzles are complex enough that it's near impossible there are lots of small things that can alter the solution, such as the bomb having a different letter on the serial number, or a certain number of batteries.Įasily my favorite puzzle so far is the 'who's on first' one, since it is so devilishly constructed as to cause a million problems in comprehension with homonyms everywhere.One of the trickiest parts of releasing our game is that we require players to have a manual in order to play. The manual always matches up with the game it even forces you to make sure you have the latest manual. The puzzle is constructed in a specific way, and the difficulty is describing it well enough that the person with the manual can figure out wtf you mean and to get the correct information to figure out the solution. Unless it's the same solution every time, how would they read their manual and have it link up with your bomb instructions?
